The conference of the day (well, I’m a day late) is the Spectrum Policy Conference at Stanford. I don’t have as much experience with the whole airwaves/spectrum issues as with the DRM issues, which isn’t much to say…
If I understand correctly, it boils down to the issues of whether we should consider the spectrum as an open/commons-style resource or as property based goods to be managed in the best interest of a nation.
As far as the arguments are concerned, I must admit that I’m not totally convinced by the « commons » side yet, but I think it mostly has to do with my lack of knowledge of the capabilities and characteristics of air waves as data carriers as a few of my favourite writers are firmly on that side. I’d still like to learn enough to convince myself though
I guess I’ll just have to read on to learn more: it’s being reported on the weblogs of the usual suspects, accessible via this Topic Exchange page or linked through the conference page above.
